Flock Print T-Shirts: The Complete Guide to a Velvet Touch & Lasting Appeal
It makes a standard T-shirt into something which you can feel — yes, it is of course flock printing. This gives it a feeling of velvet and leather that people feel compelled to reach out and touch. It gives a certain look to denim and the whole while resin-finished kids wear you see in nicer boutiques.
A flock print t-shirt features a design created from tens of thousands fabric fibers known as ‘flock’. These fibers adhere to the material, forming the pile that is then raised and creates a beautiful and luxurious design when we run over this area.
It works really well for higher end, old fashioned, or textured clothes. It makes logos, words, and other designs pop off of the shirt.
In this post, we will help explain what these shirts are, how they are made, the considerations when designing in another medium like rush flock printing and some of the pros/cons of flock printing along with great instruction on how to print to get professional looking and durable results for your brand.

How It's Made: The Two Core Methods of Flock Printing
Getting to know flock printing, allows you to understand the quality and be intelligent with choices. At ChengLin Clothing, we make use of the two primary means of flock printing — each perfect for various project sizes and types of layouts.
Method 1: Traditional Electrostatic Screen Printing Flocking (The Classic Approach)
For high quality large orders we would recommend this as the best method. This process creates the thickest and most durable flock finish, making it feel like an integral part of the shirt.
Here’s how it works:
- Artwork Separation & Screen Creation: First, we prepare like normal screen printing by separating the design and making a mesh screen for each color.
- Adhesive Application: We screen-print special glue onto the t-shirt in the shape of the design. The quality of this glue matters a lot.
- The Electrostatic Chamber: The shirt with wet glue goes into a special chamber where the shirt is grounded.
- Flock Application: A container above releases tiny fibers with a positive charge. The grounded shirt has a negative charge, pulling the fibers downward and making them stand straight up in the glue, creating a dense, even pile.
- Curing: The shirt passes through a heating oven. The heat permanently sets the glue, firmly attaching the fibers to the fabric. Extra fibers get removed with vacuum or air.
The science behind this method is what makes it feel so premium. You can learn more about the fundamental principles of flock printing to understand how it works.
Method 2: Flock Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV) (The Modern & Versatile Method)
This is a great HTV for small orders, multi-color designs that must be perfectly aligned and when your customers need a quick sample by Flock HTV. They are sheets of flock material made up and have a heat activated glue backing.
The process is clean and digital:
- Digital Cutting: The design gets sent to a digital cutter. The machine cuts the design from a sheet of flock vinyl, only cutting through the flock layer.
- Weeding: Someone removes the extra vinyl from around the cut design by hand. Detailed designs take more time to weed.
- Heat Press Application: The cut flock design on its carrier sheet is placed on the t-shirt. It’s then pressed with a heat press. The heat and pressure activate the glue, sticking the flock to the shirt.
However, specific settings are required for good results. Our default settings are 150-160°C (300-320°F) for 15-20 seconds but depends on the brand. Employing the proper time, temperature, and pressure ultimately makes for a good stick of flock without scorching other items.

Is Flock Printing Right for Your T-Shirt Design? Pros & Cons
Flock is awesome, but you should keep in mind its pros and cons before deciding if it suits to your brand vision. We are true counselors to our partners.
Based on our journey, here is what you need to know:
Advantages of Flock Print | Disadvantages & Considerations |
Unique, Premium Texture: Creates a soft, velvety feel that makes a T-shirt seem more valuable. | Limited Detail: Not good for realistic photos or designs with very fine lines and tiny text. |
High Visual Impact: The raised 3D effect makes designs stand out. Great for bold logos, strong text, and statement graphics. | Higher Cost: Usually more expensive than standard screen printing because of the flock materials and extra work. |
Excellent Durability: When done right, high-quality flock lasts a long time without shedding. | Care Requirements: Needs specific washing instructions (turn inside out, cold wash, low dry) to keep the texture looking good. |
Vibrant, Opaque Colors: Flock fibers hold color very well, giving rich, solid colors that cover well, even on dark fabrics. | Breathability: The printed area doesn’t breathe. This makes large chest prints less ideal for athletic wear. |
Flock printing is a strategic choice. It’s best for adding value and a memorable touch to bold, focused designs. By understanding its limits, you can design to its strengths.

Designing for Flock: A Manufacturer's Guide to Stunning Results
Flock printing a flock of fantasticness does not just happen! We advise clients to create art that harnesses this technique, based on our 27 years of expertise.
The Golden Rules of Flock Design
Follow these basic rules to avoid problems and create powerful graphics:
- Embrace Boldness: Flock works best for strong statements. Bold lines, solid shapes, and chunky text work best. Thin, delicate lines might not hold enough fibers, looking weak or broken. We suggest lines at least 1.5mm thick to ensure the flock sticks properly and has clean edges.
- Utilize Negative Space: Smart design uses the shirt’s color as part of the artwork. By letting the shirt show through, you can create designs that look detailed without using thin lines that don’t work well with flock. This adds depth and reduces non-breathable areas.
- Limit Your Color Palette: While multi-color flock is possible, this technique looks best with one to three colors. This approach makes the print more bold and graphic, keeps it looking premium, and costs less.
Advanced Techniques: Combining Flock with Other Prints
To create truly unique pieces, we often mix flock with other methods. This is how a brand can stand out.
- Flock and Screen Printing: This is a classic combination. We can put down a design using traditional screen printing and then use flock to highlight a key word, logo, or element. The contrast between the flat ink and the soft, raised flock looks and feels amazing.
- Flock and Embroidery: For the ultimate premium finish, we can pair flock with embroidery. Imagine a large logo filled with rich flock, outlined with precise, shiny embroidery thread. This technique combines textures for a high-end result.
These textured finishes have been highly valued decorative finishes for centuries, and by using them thoughtfully, your brand can tap into a sense of timeless quality.
Material Matters: Best Fabrics for a Flawless Flock Print T-Shirt
Flock is a very premium & luxurious technique and for having a successful flock print, it goes beyond the technique as well. A key consideration to good adhesion, feel and long term durability is choosing the right fabric.
Best Choices for Flock Printing
These fabrics provide a stable surface for flock adhesives:
- 100% Cotton: This is the best choice. The stable, natural fibers of cotton provide an ideal surface for flock applications, ensuring a strong, lasting bond.
- Cotton/Polyester Blends (e.g., 50/50, CVC): These are very popular and work very well. Blends like CVC (Chief Value Cotton) offer cotton’s softness with polyester’s durability. Flock sticks excellently to these stable surfaces.
- Polyester: 100% polyester garments work well, especially with Flock HTV made for synthetic fabrics. It’s a great option for sporty fashion pieces.
Fabrics to Approach with Caution
Fabrics that pose challenges which can be detrimental to the quality finish and lifespan of an Flock print include:
- Ribbed Fabrics (e.g., 2×1 Rib): The uneven surface of ribbed knits prevents the flock from making consistent contact, causing gaps and poor adhesion.
- High Spandex/Lycra Blends: Fabrics that stretch a lot (over 5-10%) can stress the flock design. As the fabric stretches, the non-stretch flock can crack or peel. Special stretch-compatible flock exists but must be specified.
- Treated or Coated Fabrics: Any fabric with a water-resistant coating will likely repel the flock adhesive, preventing a proper bond. Always test these materials first.
